Don’t Hesitate
by Mary OliverIf you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be. We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world. It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the
case. Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid
of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

House of Worth, c. 1893-95. Red silk velvet.
“Severe corsetting falling at the natural waist, a flaring skirt, and the return of gigot sleeves constituted a fin-de-siècle extremism. The engorgement of sleeves and skirt made this extreme constriction seem even more exaggerated in the context of the bulbous shapes surrounding the ideal, hard, narrow waist. The style was maintained well into the twentieth century as a flattering stage effect by actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt. “

I am SO sure that my local kookaburra knows I’m obsessed with him because anytime I hear him or see him in my backyard I’m running and pressing my face (and phone camera) to the glass with the giddiest smile on my face.
Also he’s looked right at me with all the judgement a bird with mocking laughter for birdsong can have. I love him.
LOOK AT HIM JUDGING ME LOL
YOU CANNOT BLAME ME SIR, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL
[ID: Two photos taken in portrait frame. The first is of a Laughing Kookaburra - an Australian tree kingfisher that is fluffy and white with brown wings (with flecks of pale sky blue) and two rectangular streaks of brown across its eyes. It has a large long beak. It is sitting on a wooden fence, backed by green foliage. The second photo is the same, except the kookaburra is looking directly at the camera.]
@groundbreakingdot872 oh yeah. ohhhh yeah. They’re Big.
Did I mention they’re also classified as carnivorous? And, when in captivity, are fed the diet of a bird of prey? And that a flock of kookaburras are called a Riot.
My favourite thing from posting this is being able to tell who’s not Australian or who is Australian from the tags
Non-Australians: oh wow they’re so big and fluffy!! I didn’t know they were so big! How cute! <3
Australians: they swoop down and steal the meat from the barbie all the time. They’re such cunts. Love them <3

Audio processing disorder is just like “you are going to be able to differentiate 27 distinct sounds happening simultaneously EXCEPT for when someone’s talking to you. Good luck”
People think because my ears are so unreasonably sensitive I must also be able to “hear” them. This is false. I can hear the clock ticking though

that james baldwin quote where he says, “it took many years of vomiting up all the filth i’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before i was able to walk on the earth as though i had a right to be here.”

ah, i’m so bad at posting here. acknowledging this Day of Mourning from the lands of Kiikaapoi, Peoria, Potawatomi, Myaamia & Ochethi Sakowin people, aka Chicago, derived from a native word for garlic (mmm…) which is really suitable for me because I live here now 🌱🧄✨
whose.land are you on? talk about it over dinner this weekend with your fam & what it means to give the #landback. considering everything, listening & learning from indigenous people is the least you can do.
